OB/GYN Medical Billing: Maternity Care and Gynecology Billed Right
Global OB Packages, Ultrasounds and Gynecologic Procedures
Obstetric billing covers months of care in a single global package, and gynecology adds office procedures, screenings and surgery. When patients change insurance mid-pregnancy or transfer care, the package has to be split correctly. Billing Care Assistant handles OB/GYN billing so prenatal, delivery, postpartum and gynecologic care are all paid.

Common OB/GYN Billing Problems We Fix
| Billing problem | Why it costs you | How we fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Global OB package billed when care was split | If the patient changes practices or insurance, the global code no longer fits | We switch to prenatal, delivery-only or postpartum codes that match the care given |
| Services outside the package not billed | High-risk visits, extra ultrasounds and unrelated problems can be billed separately | We find and bill services that are not part of the global package |
| Ultrasound coding errors | Codes depend on trimester, number of babies and complete or limited exams | We code each ultrasound from the report |
| Delivery coding mistakes | Vaginal, cesarean and VBAC deliveries use different global and delivery-only codes | We code the delivery type and any trial of labor after cesarean |
| Well-woman and screening claims denied | Preventive visits, Pap tests and HPV testing have payer-specific rules | We code preventive services so they are covered without cost sharing where the law requires |

OB/GYN Codes We Handle
Prenatal care to gynecologic surgery
We code global obstetric care (59400, 59510, 59610, 59618), prenatal-only care (59425-59426), delivery-only and postpartum codes, obstetric ultrasounds (76801-76817), non-stress tests, preventive and problem-oriented gynecology visits, Pap and HPV screening, IUD and implant insertion and removal, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy and gynecologic surgery.
How We Keep OB/GYN Claims Clean
Tracking care across the pregnancy
We track each pregnancy from the first visit to the postpartum check, verify coverage and authorization along the way, and bill the global package or split codes based on the care actually given. Our denial management team appeals denials, and our credentialing services keep providers enrolled with Medicaid and commercial plans.

Payer Rules OB/GYN Practices Should Watch
Coverage varies by payer
Medicaid pays for a large share of births, and state programs have their own rules for prenatal visits, delivery and postpartum care. Many commercial plans want the global code billed after delivery, while others pay prenatal visits as they happen. Many preventive women's health services are covered without cost sharing. We follow each payer's rules so your claims are paid on time.

OB/GYN Billing FAQs
What is included in the global obstetric package?
Routine prenatal visits, the delivery, and routine postpartum care. Services such as most ultrasounds, lab tests, and visits for problems unrelated to the pregnancy or for high-risk complications can usually be billed separately.
How do you bill when a patient changes insurance during pregnancy?
The global package is split. Each insurer is billed for the care given while the patient was covered, using prenatal, delivery-only and postpartum codes instead of one global code.
How are prenatal visits billed if the patient transfers care?
If the patient leaves before delivery, prenatal visits are billed with 59425 for four to six visits or 59426 for seven or more. One to three visits are billed as regular office visits.
Do you bill gynecology procedures as well?
Yes. We code office procedures such as colposcopy, endometrial biopsy and IUD insertion, and gynecologic surgery, with the right global periods and modifiers.
