Medical Credentialing FAQs

What is credentialing in healthcare?

Credentialing is how health plans and hospitals check a provider’s education, training, licenses, board certification, malpractice history and work history. Insurance plans require it before a provider can join their network and be paid as an in-network provider.

How long does provider credentialing take?

Most commercial insurance plans take about 60 to 120 days, and some take longer. Most delays come from missing documents, an out-of-date CAQH profile or slow follow-up. We send complete applications and follow up with each plan until the provider is approved.

How much does medical credentialing cost?

Most insurance plans do not charge providers to apply. The real cost is the staff time to prepare applications and follow up, or a credentialing company’s fee, which is usually priced per provider and per plan. Tell us how many providers and plans you need and we will give you a quote.

What documents are needed for provider credentialing?

Usually a state medical license, DEA registration if you prescribe controlled drugs, board certification, malpractice insurance, a CV with full work history, your NPI, tax ID and W-9, and practice location details. We collect them once and reuse them for every application.

What do credentialing companies do for providers?

A credentialing company prepares and submits applications to each insurance plan, keeps your CAQH profile current, follows up until you are approved and tracks re-credentialing dates so you never lapse. Billing Care Assistant also handles payer enrollment, contracting and portal setup.
