Urgent Care Billing: High Volume, Fast Turnaround, Fewer Denials
Walk-In Visits, Procedures, Labs and X-Rays
Urgent care centers see many patients a day, often without appointments, and every visit has to be checked, coded and billed quickly. Payers differ on how urgent care is paid, and small front-desk errors add up fast. Billing Care Assistant handles urgent care billing so claims go out quickly and denials stay low.

Common Urgent Care Billing Problems We Fix
| Billing problem | Why it costs you | How we fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility not checked at walk-in | Inactive coverage or the wrong plan leads to denials days later | We set up quick eligibility checks so problems are caught at the front desk |
| Payer-specific urgent care codes | Some plans pay a set urgent care rate using S9083 or S9088, others want standard visit codes | We follow each contract so visits are billed the way the payer pays them |
| Procedure and visit on the same day | Laceration repairs, splints and drainage procedures need modifier 25 on a separate visit | We code procedures and visits from the provider note with the right modifiers |
| In-house lab tests | CLIA-waived tests need the QW modifier and your CLIA number | We bill lab tests with the right codes, modifiers and CLIA details |
| Workers’ comp and employer services | Work injuries and employer services follow different rules and fee schedules | We set up employer accounts and bill each case to the right payer |

Urgent Care Services We Bill
Every service in a busy shift
We code new and established patient visits (99202-99215), after-hours and weekend codes where payers allow them (99050-99051), laceration repairs, splinting, incision and drainage, foreign body removal, in-house X-rays, CLIA-waived lab tests with modifier QW, injections and vaccines, and occupational medicine services such as drug screens and pre-employment physicals.
How We Keep Urgent Care Claims Moving
Speed without shortcuts
We send claims within days of the visit, scrub them for payer edits, and post payments quickly so your team can see what each patient owes. Denials go straight to our denial management team, and new providers are added to payer contracts through our credentialing services so they can see patients without billing delays.

Payer Rules Urgent Care Centers Should Watch
Contracts decide how you get paid
Urgent care contracts vary widely: some pay a flat case rate, some pay standard fee schedules, and some treat urgent care like a specialist visit with a higher copay. Place of service 20 is used for urgent care facilities. Medicare does not recognize S codes, so Medicare visits are billed with standard visit codes. We set up billing rules for each payer so claims match your contracts.

Urgent Care Billing FAQs
What place of service code is used for urgent care?
Place of service 20 is used for urgent care facilities. Some payers pay differently based on this code, so it has to match how your center is set up and contracted.
What are S9083 and S9088?
They are HCPCS codes some commercial payers use to pay urgent care visits at a set rate. Medicare does not use them, so they are billed only when your contract with that payer calls for them.
Can a procedure and an office visit be billed on the same day?
Yes, if the visit is significant and separately identifiable from the procedure. The visit is billed with modifier 25 and the documentation needs to support both services. Read more about modifier 25.
Do you bill workers’ compensation and employer services?
Yes. We bill workers’ compensation carriers using state rules and set up direct billing to employers for services such as drug screens and pre-employment physicals.
